Lifestyle in Darjeeling is markedly different from that of other district towns. May be that is because origin of the town lies embedded in the British colonial era, whose culture as well as way of life has left deep impression on its residents. In all probability, the first gym to come up in Darjeeling was the Gymkhana Club. Established in 1909, the club is located just above the Mall Road, next to the Raj Bahwan. Today, it has more than 400 permanent members. In addition, their guests are offered temporary membership and are allowed to use all the facilities. However, in spite of its name,  the club does not really have any gymnasium right now; it is at present more famous for other activities such as roller skating, badminton, table tennis etc.
